Preventing Sleep Apnea

There are many illnesses and diseases that can be prevented by leading a healthy life of exercise and eating right. Of course sometimes that isn’t enough and you may require medication or other medical intervention. In the case of sleep apnea it is difficult to say that you can prevent it. Are the causes of sleep apnea something you can prevent or are you eventually going to have sleep apnea anyway ? Sleep apnea is caused by the blockage of the airway in the back of the throat thus causing you to wake up suddenly gasping for air. Why is there blockage in the back of the throat? It could excess tissue or it could an enlarged tongue or even the shape of your face may play a part in it. The excess tissue happens frequently because of the sleep apnea sufferer being overweight. That is not to say that every person who has sleep apnea is overweight but it is very common. What if you would lose the weight would you still have sleep apnea? Causes and Cures of Sleep Apnea

Sleep and the lack of it is a major health concern today. Many sleep disorders are being studied to try to find relief from the perils of sleeping too little Among those sleep disorders sleep apnea is probably most well known of the group. The cause of Obstructive Sleep Apnea is the blockage of the airway in the back of the throat.   Things that contribute to sleep apnea   Probably the most talked about cause of sleep apnea is weight gain. Sleep Apnea and losing weight

There has been a lot of information on the web lately about how losing weight will help with sleep apnea. A study done at the Center for Obesity Research and Education at Temple University in Philadelphia has come to the conclusion that a loss of 10 percent will greatly reduce sleep apnea in patients. Most of headlines that I have read will have you believe that is just folks with sleep apnea. The study was actually done with people who also had type 2 diabetes. This all sounds encouraging but I can’t see that losing 10 percent of your weight can have that much effect on sleep apnea because not all sleep apnea is caused by being overweight . My father had sleep apnea and he wasn’t overweight. Losing weight wasn’t an option for him and even if it was it wouldn’t have helped his sleep apnea. The other causes of sleep apnea are: The size and shape of your head may cause the airway in your mouth to be smaller When you get older your brain sends signals to the muscles in the mouth ...
